Woo-hoo! We survived the first week!

I will admit, this week seemed really long but we had so much fun getting to know each other and learning all the rules in first grade. The first couple of days, we read fun beginning of the school year books. We read Lacey Walker, Nonstop Talker and talked about what a good listener looks like. This year at Summitt, we are implementing something called SEL which stands for Social Emotional Learning. The first lesson was about  waiting for our turn and being a good listener. The kids did a good job with this lesson. We played "my turn, your turn" at the end of the weekly lesson. Ask your child to explain the rules to this game :)

We spent this week exploring the manipulatives in the math center. The students go to math center once they have completed their math work.

In science, we did a fun experiment to kick off first grade. Each table had a cup of water. Then each member at the table put in their gummy bear and we recorded our observations of our gummy bear. We then predicted what our gummy bear was going to look like the next day. A lot of the kids guessed that the gummy bear was going to expand and become bigger and they were right! You can't really tell that the gummy bears expanded in the picture since it looks fuzzy in the cup, but the gummies grew almost double the size overnight.

In Vietnamese Language Arts this week, we focused on saying and identifying colors in Vietnamese. We will probably focus on colors for the next week.

Please make sure you are checking your child’s folder daily. There will be lots of letters going home this upcoming week including the first grade fees. We will also be starting weekly homework!

WELCOME BACK, WELCOME BACK!

I hope everyone is enjoying their last week left of summer. I can’t wait to see everyone next week for Meet the Teacher. Meet the Teacher will be on Thursday, August 20th from 4-6PM. Please remember to bring all your school supplies.

Even though I had a fun, relaxing summer... I’m ready to get back to teaching. This summer, I went to nice ol’ sunny California and green ol’ Portland, Oregon. Here are some pictures from my summer vacations.
