On Wednesday, we got to go to the cafeteria in the morning to
enjoy the 5th grade science expo. The students really enjoyed it
because it had a lot of hands-on experiments and they got to see their 5th
grade science buddies.
This week in math, we started our unit on fractions. On Monday,
we focused on halves. We learned that one half is written as ½ and when you
have half of something, you have two separate parts that are equal sizes. We
made our own pizza that I hung up on our math wall. Students got to create
their own pizzas. Some students decided to make their pizza:
½ sausages and ½ pepperoni
½ cheese and ½ pepperoni
½ mushroom and ½ pepperoni
½ vegetarian and ½ bacon
First graders are expected to know halves, thirds, and fourths
but I wanted to push them a little bit more. They did a fun Skittles fraction
activity with the sub on Monday. Of course when it involves food, learning is
that much more fun.
Thursday, we had a 2 hour delay and it really messed up on
schedule with our Lunar New Years performance. We will be rescheduling it to
next Thursday so please have your child place their costumes in the bag and
have them return it to school by Wednesday. Since the schedule was so crazy,
Suzanne and I decided to keep our homerooms and not switch at all that day to
catch up.
Thursday was also Mrs. Skalaban’s birthday! On Monday, we
started making her birthday cards in Vietnamese and it was supposed to be a
surprise. I should have known…when you tell 6 and 7 year olds to keep something
a secret, it ends up not being secret. Oh well, the kids had fun making cards
for her anyways.
