Winding down February

This week has been busy with parent conferences, a training on Wednesday, and one million other miscellaneous things on the to-do list.

We continued our unit on how to tell time in math. The students are really impressing me on how fast some of them are getting the concept. This past week, we learned why it’s important to be able to tell time. I asked them why it’s important and they said It’s important to tell time so that they are not late to the dentist or other places. We focused on vocabulary words like:

Half past

A quarter to

A quarter past

To the hour

We also worked on solving time through word problems. I am trying to incorporate more reading within math so they can practice their reading and problem solving skills. They need to be reading every chance they get in class. Next week we are supposed to be moving on to solving word problems but I think I might extend the time telling unit a couple more days or even for the whole week.

I spent hours preparing for the time telling math tubs this weekend. I was glad to see the kids had fun doing activities from the tub after completing their math work. The favorite one was the Bunny Time Telling.

Last week, we learned about super soil. There are soils called silt, clay, and sand. We compared the color, texture, and sizes of each soil. Each student was given 2 pieces of tape. They were to collect 2 different type of soil and compare the 2 in their spirals.

During VLA time, I am now starting to use from a Vietnamese learning program so you’ll see more Vietnamese work going home in their folders. Before this, we have been working on phonics, accents, and sight words. I am hoping to have them produce more Vietnamese orally and incorporate more reading. Right now, we have a set of sight words and then we’ll write sentences with our sight words.

quần = pants

quét = sweep

quà = present

pháo = fireworks

phòng = room

phở = Vietnamese noodle soup

What’s living or nonliving?! We learned how to say living and nonliving in Vietnamese and what makes something living. Something living needs water, food, shelter, air, and needs to be able to reproduce.

We worked with our science bilingual buddy to make a class book of things that are living and nonliving.

February is National Children’s Dental Month. We did a lot of different writing activities for health grades this month.

Mrs. Richey, our fabulous librarian, set up a presentation for us from people who work in the dental field to help us learn about how we could take care of our teeth.

One more week of school and it’s time for SPRING BREAK! I don’t know about y’all, but I’m ready. Make sure the kids are reading over the break!!! By the time we know it, I will be assessing the end of the year reading test again soon. They need to be at a level 16 at the end of the year.

AISD has decided to use March 3rd as a weather inclement day instead of June 6th. Last day of school will be June 5th!

Chuc Mung Nam Moi!

We did it! Got through this busy week. We performed our day show for the school on Thursday and it was a blast. I’m so proud of the kiddos for all their hard work. I will be sending home their outfits next week.
For the Lunar New Year, I gave each student in both classes a red envelope with lucky money. We learned about traditions and how people celebrate the new year. I think I spent way too much time trying to find cute envelopes for the students but it's ok because they were really excited about receiving it.

It’s the year of the HORSE!

Horses are known for being strong-willed and unbridled as well as charming and intelligent. According to "The Handbook Of Chinese Horoscopes," the Horse is self-centered by nature and wants things done his way. "Performance and success oriented, he always has his sights set on some target... With his remarkable powers of persuasion, he will set out to sway people to his way of thinking. Snapping his fingers and clicking his heels, this trailblazer could talk you into anything once he begins to dish out the charm. People find it hard to resist his positive and self-assured outlook on life."

These past weekends, I have been traveling around town with our school’s dragon/lion dance team. Although I really enjoy it, it’s sooo exhausting. I don’t know how the kids do it. They perform for venues back to back and are so determined to perform whether the condition. Rain or shine, cold or hot. Such troopers!

Here is the website if you want to learn more about them:

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hope everyone has a fantastic Valentine’s Day!

Silly Quote of the Week:

Looking at all the chocolates and sweet gifts I got on my desk...

S: "Cô Tracy, I didn't want to buy you chocolates because I don't you you to get fat."

con ngựa = horse

con thỏ = rabbit

con chó = dog

con vịt = duck

Science Expo, Fractions, and Mrs. Skalaban's Birthday!

On Wednesday, we got to go to the cafeteria in the morning to enjoy the 5th grade science expo. The students really enjoyed it because it had a lot of hands-on experiments and they got to see their 5th grade science buddies.

This week in math, we started our unit on fractions. On Monday, we focused on halves. We learned that one half is written as ½ and when you have half of something, you have two separate parts that are equal sizes. We made our own pizza that I hung up on our math wall. Students got to create their own pizzas. Some students decided to make their pizza:
½ sausages and ½ pepperoni
½ cheese and ½ pepperoni
½ mushroom and ½ pepperoni
½ vegetarian and ½ bacon
First graders are expected to know halves, thirds, and fourths but I wanted to push them a little bit more. They did a fun Skittles fraction activity with the sub on Monday. Of course when it involves food, learning is that much more fun.

Thursday, we had a 2 hour delay and it really messed up on schedule with our Lunar New Years performance. We will be rescheduling it to next Thursday so please have your child place their costumes in the bag and have them return it to school by Wednesday. Since the schedule was so crazy, Suzanne and I decided to keep our homerooms and not switch at all that day to catch up.

Thursday was also Mrs. Skalaban’s birthday! On Monday, we started making her birthday cards in Vietnamese and it was supposed to be a surprise. I should have known…when you tell 6 and 7 year olds to keep something a secret, it ends up not being secret. Oh well, the kids had fun making cards for her anyways.

Fingers crossed that it is still on! I sent home the outfits with the kids today JUST in case of no school Friday and good thing I did.
