This week has been busy with parent conferences, a training
on Wednesday, and one million other miscellaneous things on the to-do list.
We continued our unit on how to tell time in math. The
students are really impressing me on how fast some of them are getting the
concept. This past week, we learned why it’s important to be able to tell time.
I asked them why it’s important and they said It’s important to tell time so
that they are not late to the dentist or other places. We focused on vocabulary
words like:
Half past
A quarter to
A quarter past
To the hour
We also worked on solving time through word problems. I am
trying to incorporate more reading within math so they can practice their
reading and problem solving skills. They need to be reading every chance they
get in class. Next week we are supposed to be moving on to solving word
problems but I think I might extend the time telling unit a couple more days or
even for the whole week.
I spent hours preparing for the time telling math tubs this
weekend. I was glad to see the kids had fun doing activities from the tub after
completing their math work. The favorite one was the Bunny Time Telling.
Last week, we learned about super soil. There are soils
called silt, clay, and sand. We compared the color, texture, and sizes of each
soil. Each student was given 2 pieces of tape. They were to collect 2 different
type of soil and compare the 2 in their spirals.
During VLA time, I am now starting to use from a Vietnamese
learning program so you’ll see more Vietnamese work going home in their
folders. Before this, we have been working on phonics, accents, and sight
words. I am hoping to have them produce more Vietnamese orally and incorporate
more reading. Right now, we have a set of sight words and then we’ll write
sentences with our sight words.
quần
= pants
quét
= sweep
quà
= present
pháo
= fireworks
phòng
= room
phở = Vietnamese noodle soup
What’s living or nonliving?! We learned how to say living
and nonliving in Vietnamese and what makes something living. Something living
needs water, food, shelter, air, and needs to be able to reproduce.
We worked with our science bilingual buddy to make a class
book of things that are living and nonliving.
February is National Children’s Dental Month. We did a lot
of different writing activities for health grades this month.
Mrs. Richey, our fabulous librarian, set up a presentation
for us from people who work in the dental field to help us learn about how we
could take care of our teeth.
One more week of school and it’s time for SPRING BREAK! I
don’t know about y’all, but I’m ready. Make
sure the kids are reading over the break!!! By the time we know it, I will
be assessing the end of the year reading test again soon. They need to be at a
level 16 at the end of the year.
AISD has decided to use March 3rd as a weather
inclement day instead of June 6th. Last day of school will be June 5th!
